A Message From Scott Davis

As I mentioned in last week’s email, our recent engagement survey scores from both our physicians and our team members echoed a strong sentiment of confidence in the direction we are moving. I am so grateful for your support as we have worked together over this time. A little over a year ago, we asked you to put your trust in us and we’re humbled that you did. I am incredibly proud of the impact we’ve been able to make in the last year, and I want to share some of the incredible progress we’ve achieved together.

Our achievements are a testament to what we can accomplish when we work directly and collaboratively with one another. We are creating a workplace where your voice is heard, your well-being is prioritized, and your commitment to excellence is celebrated.

Our Position

Swedish has a more than 100-year history of working closely with our colleagues and physicians to care for our community. We believe working directly with you, without an outside third party between us, is key to fostering the kind of collaboration that has enabled us to provide nationally-recognized care.

Like any business, the National Nurses United (NNU) labor union needs customers — in this case you — to pay dues so they can stay in business. They make money by organizing to get members. And when campaigning to win an election to organize, labor unions like NNU are allowed to make promises, exaggerate and even mislead.

We developed this site to provide you important facts about NNU and collective bargaining and the realities of labor union representation so you can make an informed decision about your future.

We’ll be updating the site regularly, so check back often for the latest facts about this important choice.

You are not required to vote, but we strongly encourage you to do so. The outcome of the election will be determined by a simple majority of those who actually vote, not on the total number of eligible voters. It only takes 50% +1 of those who vote to win an election.

Your Rights

Understanding your legal rights is the first step

In making an informed, educated decision about union representation and how it might impact you. Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) protects an individual associate’s right to engage – or not to engage – in union support, membership, and other protected concerted activities. Your decision to support or not support unionization will in no way impact your employment.

NNU Doesn’t Deliver for Colorado Nurses!

In April 2021, National Nurses United filed a petition to represent RNs at
Longmont United Hospital (LUH). NNU won that election by a single vote.1

More than three years after filing the petition, National Nurses United still does not have a contract at Longmont United Hospital! The hospital is staffed with contract nurses because many LUH nurses have left since the facility unionized.5

No Staffing Ratios

17 other HCA-affliiated hospitals are bargaining with NNU now. Nearly all of them have had NNU for more than a decade - and NONE of them have staffing ratios.

A Message from RNs Who Severed Ties with the NNU

On May 10th, nurses at the HCA Healthcare-affiliated Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas, voted to remove NNU as their union. Here’s what Valley RNs want to share with Swedish nurses about NNU representation.

Swedish Colleagues,

Our Registered Nurses have made their voices heard, and we’re happy to share that Swedish nurses have voted to continue to work directly with us. Thank you for putting your trust in my new leadership team and giving our vision for Swedish a chance.

In the very near future, the vote will be behind us. Now we can lean into bringing some of the very successful initiatives at our prior hospitals to Swedish, including resources to better support surge and float pool staffing, more efficient patient discharge procedures and bedside workflows, hands-on support for new colleagues in orientation and throughout their onboarding, as well as recruiting and retaining unit leadership and colleagues.

Your senior team and I recognize this has been a long process, and some colleagues felt differently about the direction nursing should go. We are committed to working with all colleagues to make Swedish a better place for everyone. We’re confident that we’re better together. Thank you for putting your trust in our vision!

With gratitude,
Scott
